Firewall
A firewall can be a very powerful tool. It is mainly used to keep people and/or programs from connecting to your computer. A lot of times viruses and worms will try to spread themselves around the internet and if you have your firewall on then you will have a greater chance of avoiding the infection. It is a good idea to keep the firewall on at all times.
There are a large number of firewalls out there, some free, some not. This page only describes how to use the firewall that is built into Windows XP SP2.
